Military patches with Velcro, iron on or sew on

Choose the backing that fits how you will wear the patch.

  • Hook & Loop (Velcro-style): a hook panel on the patch and a loop panel for your gear. Swap the patch between jackets, caps, bags and plate carriers whenever you like. This is the most popular choice for morale patches.
  • Sew On: the most secure option for daily wear and for items that get washed often.
  • Iron On: a quick, no-sew application with a household iron, good for hats, jeans and canvas.

How to attach each backing

  1. Sew On: pin the patch in place and stitch around the edge with a matching thread, by hand or with a machine.
  2. Iron On: place the patch on the fabric, cover it with a thin cloth, press with a hot iron for about 30 seconds, then flip and press again. For extra hold on heavy items, add a few stitches around the edge.
  3. Hook & Loop: sew the soft loop panel onto the garment, then press the patch on. Sew the panel with a straight stitch around its edge.

We make and ship patches. We do not sew them onto garments, but a local tailor or alterations shop can sew one on for you.

Morale patches

Morale patches are unofficial patches with humor, team pride or a personal message. Many people collect them and display them on hook-and-loop panels, caps, vests and bags. We can make yours in any design you send, in sizes from 2.5 to 12 inches, with fine lines and multiple thread colors.

Military-style patches for jackets, hats and vests

Larger patches (7 to 12 inches) work well on jacket backs and vests. Mid-size patches (3 to 5 inches) suit sleeves, caps and bags. Small patches (2.5 to 3 inches) suit hats, chest pockets and name tapes. If you are not sure which size or backing to choose, send us what you have in mind and we will recommend one.

Military patch meanings and types

Military patches come in a few main types. This is general information. Meanings and wear rules are set by each branch and unit.

  • Unit patches: show the unit a service member belongs to or served with.
  • Rank insignia: show a service member's rank.
  • Flag patches: show the national flag. On many US uniforms the flag is worn reversed, with the stars facing forward, so it looks like the flag is advancing.
  • Name tapes and tapes: show a surname or branch.
  • Qualification and skill badges: show training, skills or specialty.
  • Morale patches: unofficial patches with humor, slogans or personal designs.

Where a patch goes on a uniform depends on the branch and the current uniform regulation, so check your unit's guidance before you sew on anything for duty wear. For jackets, vests, caps and bags you wear off duty, you can place a patch wherever you like.

Military patches: frequently asked questions

What are military patches?

Military patches are embroidered or woven badges worn on uniforms, jackets, hats and gear. They show a unit, a rank, a flag, a skill, or a personal or team message. Many are official uniform items. Others, such as morale patches, are unofficial.

Are military patches woven or embroidered?

Both types exist. We make embroidered patches only. For detailed designs we digitize the artwork by hand so the stitching stays clean and the patch looks close to your original.

Why do military uniforms and gear use Velcro patches?

Hook-and-loop backing lets patches be added, swapped and removed without sewing, so one jacket, cap or plate carrier can carry different patches over time. Some uniform patches are sewn on instead.

What is a morale patch?

A morale patch is an unofficial patch, often humorous or personal, worn to show team spirit or personality. Whether they are allowed on a uniform depends on the unit and its regulations.

Where do military patches go on a uniform?

Placement is set by each branch and the current uniform regulation, and it can change. Check your unit's guidance before sewing on patches for duty wear. For civilian jackets, vests, caps and bags, you can place patches anywhere.

Why is the flag backwards on military patches?

A flag patch on a sleeve is often worn with the stars facing forward, so the flag appears to move forward as the wearer moves, as if it were flying in the wind.

Can civilians wear military patches?

Wearing a patch on a jacket, cap or bag is not generally illegal. Claiming military service, honors or benefits you did not earn can be. This is general information, not legal advice. Our patches are custom designs, not official insignia.

Can you make a custom military patch with just one?

Yes. There is no minimum order. You can order one patch, or packs of 5, 10, 25 or 50 online. For more than 50, request a quote.

What size are military patches?

Our patches run from 2.5 to 12 inches. Small sizes suit hats and name tapes, and larger sizes suit jacket backs and vests. Rectangular name tapes, such as 5 by 1.25 inches, can be made as a custom order.

Where can I get military patches made?

You can order custom patches from SanZay Embroidery Studio online. We ship across the United States, with free standard shipping. We do not sew patches onto garments.

Do you make PVC or woven military patches?

No. We make embroidered patches only.
